Know your options.

There’s no magic fix to being 100% safe on a farm vehicle but getting the right mix of safeguards for your own farm business is a great start. Check out the list of tools you could be using for your quads or side by sides.

Crush Protection Devices

A simple bit of kit that could stop a quad bike from crushing you.

‍Crush Protection Devices (CPDs) fit to the back of a quad bike and create a space that can help protect the rider if the bike rolls. They work by holding the bike off the ground so the rider isn’t pinned or crushed underneath and has room to move or escape.

CPDs can also change the way a quad rolls, which may reduce the severity of some low-speed overturns. Some designs use flexible materials to absorb impact forces and improve protection.

GPS/Telemetry Systems

Know when things are getting risky - and get help fast if they do.

‍A GPS/telemetry system keeps track of where your vehicles are and how they’re being driven. Sensors in the system can pick up things like rollover risk, rough driving or unsafe conditions while the vehicle is operating.

On farm, that means better visibility and faster response when something goes wrong. Systems like Safetrax give drivers real-time rollover warnings and automatically send an SOS with the vehicle’s location to your nominated contacts if a rollover happens.

It also gives you useful data to spot risk patterns, improve training, and quickly locate vehicles and people in an emergency.

Speed Limiters

Controlling speed is one of the simplest ways to reduce vehicle risk.

‍A speed limiter prevents a vehicle from travelling above a set maximum speed. Slower speeds give riders more time to react, reduce stopping distance, and lower the likelihood of serious injury in a crash.

On farm, they help manage risk by keeping vehicles within safer operating limits. This also supports other safety measures - for example, many helmets are designed to protect riders in impacts of around 30 km/h, with protection decreasing at higher speeds.

Speed limiters generally come in two forms:

‍Electronic (linked to the engine system)
‍Mechanical (physically restricting throttle)

Helmets

Protect your head - it’s the one bit of safety gear you can’t replace.

‍A helmet is designed to protect a rider’s head when operating vehicles like quad bikes and side-by-sides. It has a hard outer shell to manage impact and a shock-absorbing liner that helps reduce the force of a blow.

Helmets come in different styles, including full-face, open-face and modular, offering different levels of coverage depending on the job and conditions.

On farm, helmets help reduce the risk of serious head injury if a rider rolls a vehicle, crashes, or is thrown off. With uneven terrain and shifting loads common on farm tracks and paddocks, wearing an approved helmet can significantly lower the chance of severe head trauma.

Tyre Pressure Gauge

The right tyre pressure can make the difference between grip and a rollover.

A tyre pressure gauge is a handheld tool used to measure the air pressure inside a vehicle’s tyres.

For quad bikes and side‑by‑sides on farms, knowing and maintaining the correct tyre pressure is important for safe and effective operation. Correct pressure helps ensure consistent traction - especially on soft or uneven terrain, supports stable handling and reduces the likelihood of rollovers. It also helps tyres wear evenly, extending their lifespan and lowers the risk of punctures or other tyre failures.

Regular pressure checks are important when vehicles move between different surfaces or loads. Recommended pressure should always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.
