Finding the Right Fit: How Five Star Beef Tackled Ankle Injuries
A range of practical measures is helping reduce ankle injuries at ANZCO Foods’ Five Star Beef operation.
After noticing an increase in ankle injuries, the site took the opportunity to review the contributing factors. Rather than looking for a single fix, the team explored several practical improvements to better support their people.
One key change involved footwear. At Five Star Beef, stock staff spend much of their day on foot or on horseback. Generic gumboots had traditionally been used across the site, but some staff found they lacked the support needed for this type of work.
Following discussions with the team and trials of different options, around half of the stock staff transitioned to lace-up boots better suited to the terrain. To manage the new gear safely, staff are also reminded to keep laces tucked and secured to prevent them catching in stirrups.
Alongside footwear changes, the site updated its induction programme to include ankle-strengthening exercises and guidance on safe mounting, dismounting, and vehicle access.
These changes show that health and safety is about continuous improvement. By listening to workers, trialling solutions, and making practical adjustments, Five Star Beef has developed a fit-for-purpose approach to keeping its team on their feet.

If your work boots are held together by duct tape, prayer, and "she'll be right", daylight through the soles is a genuine slip-and-trip risk waiting to happen.
Dust off your camera and get ready to show us your worst pairs. Our #BootsOfShame competition launches on 12 October with four weekly $200 Prezzy Cards and an overall grand prize of a brand-new pair of Gronell Everest boots valued at $729 RRP up for grabs.
